The Columbus Dispatch is reporting that the governor of Ohio has received 165,000 petition signatures asking him to pardon Kelley Williams-Bolar, the woman who spent 10 days in jail for fraudulently enrolling her children in a more desirable school district.
The signaturs which were collected by Change.org, ColorofChange.org and MomsRising.org were delivered to Gov. John Kasich’s office Monday.
Exerpt from the Dispatch:
Kasich has expressed sympathy for Williams-Bolar’s situation and directed legal advisers to look into it.
“We’re still gathering facts on it,” said Rob Nichols, the governor’s spokesman. “People feel passionately about it, and we’re grateful to them for expressing their concerns.”
Before Williams-Bolar can be considered for a pardon, either the governor or she – or her attorney – must ask the Ohio Parole Board to take up the case. As of yesterday, no request had been made.
The Williams-Bolar case drew international attention after she was convicted of tampering with records to enroll her daughters, now 16 and 12, in the Copley-Fairlawn School District for the 2006 school year. The two girls attended the Copley-Fairlawn schools, where their grandfather lives, for two years, and their mother was indicted in November 2009 for falsifying records portraying the girls as residents of the district.
Williams-Bolar, 40, was found guilty on two felony counts and sentenced to five years in prison, but an Akron judge suspended the prison term and ordered her to spend 10 days in the Summit County jail.
A few weeks back a BMWK article on the topic sparked intense debate.

I think jail time is ridiculous, she tried to give her kids a better start to what will soon become adulthood. I’m sure she had great Intensions for doing this. Someone is always there to hold you back. Look deeper into the situation, maybe there was bad influences in her district, bullies, drugs, school run down, no good teachers, bad school period…hell I it were me I would have done the same thing. GREAT JOB MOM!!!!
Congratulations on your 73yrs. of Marraige. That is very beautiful, God has truly Bleesed this couple!!!
I would have done the same thing also, for the best interest of my children. Maybe she did live in an area where there are numerous problems with the Public School. I moved from the inner city of Philadelphia, Pa. to 1st, South Carolina for 2 1/2 yrs., then to Atlanta, Ga. for the best interest of my children. Everyone wants better for their children, so why prosecute this mother for doing the best for her children. And there is nothing wong with her getting help from her family. I don’t blame her father for helping with his grandchildren, while she works, better than leaving them at home by themselves where a lot of our youth get into trouble with no Adult supervision. Maybe she didn’t feel comfortable with the young girls coming home to an empty house while she works. GET THE REAL CRMINALS AND PROSECUTE THEM !!!
All I can think about is the number of students who attending school with me in the county, when I personally knew they lived in the city and or out of state.
This is so common for people of all nationalities. Ms. Bolar isnt the first nor the last. Instead of imprisoning her and spending all this money on this trail they should seek to make better school district for everyone.
Community Service if anything as a punishment.. this is cruel and unusal considering the facts of the grandfather living in the area. A simples witch of power of attorney to grandfather is all that is neccessary to allow temporarycustody to the grandfather.
This type of agreement doesnt have to be a written agreement ( although a letter of parental custody notorize would help in the now) but the agreement could have been implied. She has a crappy lawyer not to mention… I seen murder trails go smoother
As a school teacher I have witnessed “alternate attendance” on many occassions. It is hardly worthy of jail time.
