On Wednesday, Dean Baquet was named the Executive Editor of The New York Times, replacing Jill Abramson, the first female Executive Editor who was dismissed from her role after serving in the position since September 2011.
Baquet is a former editor of the Los Angeles Times and also won a Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting in 1998. He was actually fired from his position at the Los Angeles Times for refusing to make staff cuts ordered by the newspaper’s publisher. Baquet, 57, is no stranger to The New York Times and has served as managing editor since 2012.
In accepting his new position Baquet said, “I will listen hard, I will be hands on, I will be engaged. I’ll walk the room. That’s the only way I know how to edit. Let’s take risks, let’s not beat each other up when we fail, let’s work together. Let’s not get paralyzed by guessing what Dean or anybody else wants. Give it a shot.”
