Getting the flu shot annually is something that many of us take for granted, myself included. Unfortunately, however, not everyone makes a full recovery after contracting the flu. Alice Jones, a healthy 29-year-old Texas mother and aspiring nurse, developed flu symptoms on a Thursday, along with her husband, Darrell. While he began to recover within a few days, his wife’s symptoms persisted and she was pronounced dead at University General Hospital on Monday, January 6th.
Darrell Jones, a criminal justice student who served in Afghanistan as a member of the U.S Army, truly believed that the most dangerous part of their marriage was the fact that he served in the military. Never did he think he would lose his wife to something like the flu.
The three children, ages 10, 7, and 3, were checked out for the flu and vaccinated upon recommendations from the doctors following their mother’s death. One child tested positive for the flu. Darrell Jones said, “If that didn’t happen, maybe my son would have died, as well. I don’t know what I would have done if it was my wife and son.” Jones is now encouraging others to get flu shots.
Currently, Darrell Jones and his sons are staying with relatives because they are too devastated to stay in their own home. Alice Jones’s funeral will take place today, January 10th. May she rest in peace, and may her children and husband find the strength to manage this difficult time in their lives.
BMWK family, has your family been vaccinated against the flu this season?
