Essence magazine and Hampton Inn hotels came up with 8 tips for travel since the holiday travel season is quickly approaching. Check them out here:
1. Pack Light
It’s not Christmas yet, so no need to travel with bags of presents for your friends and family on this trip. Remember, many airlines charge a fee per checked bag. If possible, limit what you carry to the minimum of two carry-on bags that will fit in the overhead space. Plan now to mail your holiday gifts so you won’t have to bring them on your next trip.
2. BYOL!
Airlines aren’t exactly bistros in the sky, so we’re sure you won’t fret if you sleep through a meal. But depending on the airline, you’ll be lucky if food is even available. Many airlines have cut back by serving snacks, not meals, on flights less than four hours. And even then, meals are often for sale at high prices. Cut costs and Bring Your Own Lunch for the plane.
3. Check for Power
Got work to do while you wait? Don’t let a lack of power stand in your way. Recognizing that more travelers are carrying laptops and looking for power, many airports, train and bus terminals have set up banks of outlets sponsored by electronics companies. Check if your departure destination has a place where you can plug in and power up.
4. Charge Your Cell
The cell phone isn’t just for making calls anymore. It’s more than likely that you’ve got important contact info and even your itinerary stored on your mobile device. Avoid being disconnected from the world by making sure you’ve got a full charge, batteries and a power cord.
5. GPS
This should mean Good Planning Saves time to the avid traveler. Holiday traffic will do its part to make you late for Thanksgiving Day dinner. Don’t add any extra time to the trip by getting lost. If you’re driving, save time by getting a GPS (available at most rental car companies) or a clear set of directions to your destination.
6. Lock Up!
Secure your home before you leave by setting the alarm. Create the appearance that someone is home by having a friend collect your mail. If you have two cars, park one in the driveway. This would be a great time to activate the timer to turn on interior lights””you don’t want to come home to unexpected company!
7. Get Cozy
If traveling by car, bring pillows and blankets. Take advantage of rest stops, stretch and make use of restrooms. Most important, make sure your car is set for music””iPod compatible or bring your favorite CDs””for family sing-a-longs.
8. Don’t Stray
If your flight is delayed, don’t wander too far away from the gate. You don’t want to end up watching your flight take off! Stay alert for flight announcements, gate changes or other news.
