An investigation of the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin has wrapped and will be handed over to the Florida State Attorney’s office who will decide whether or not shooter George Zimmerman will be arrested.
Zimmerman, 28, has been questioned but he has not been arrested because he claims he acted in self-defense. Despite this, Martin’s family and their attorney, Natalie Jackson have made several pleas for his arrest and are currently suing for access to the 911 call that sparked the incident.
“”My son left Sanford, Fla., in a body bag, while George Zimmerman went home to to go to sleep in his own bed,” said Tracy Martin, Trayvon’s father, to WESH Orlando. “It’s senseless and the police in Sanford, Fla., isn’t giving any answers and we actually feel that justice hasn’t been served and isn’t being served.”
The younger Martin was unarmed when Zimmerman approached him after he called 911 to report Martin as a “suspicious looking person.” Zimmerman had been instructed not to follow Martin but he ignored the order and after making contact with the teenager a dispute ensued and Zimmerman shot Martin in the chest. It has been reported that Martin was coming back from a store after buying snacks for himself and his younger brother. The only items found on Martin were a bag of Skittles candy and an iced tea canned drink.
The shooting has sparked a wave of controversy and accusations of racial profiling on Zimmerman’s part. Last Saturday, a crowd gathered outside of the Sanford police department to protest during a press conference. The protesters believe the police department is “covering up” the incident and is “protecting” Zimmerman.
There has not been any word from the State Attorney’s office about the case.
BWMK family, how do you feel about Zimmerman not being arrested? Is the police department being fair?
