Couples who have problems conceiving often opt for surrogacy or adoption. One couple, however, found the newest addition to their family, Ben, on Craigslist. After posting an ad for adoption on the site, Tracey and Dan Citron of Minnesota got a response from soon to be mom, Tammy Nelson.
According to the ABC News article, people have used newspaper ads to find adoptive children for years, but through the use of the Internet, parents across the country have the opportunity to connect. Yahoo! Shine reporter, Piper Weiss, has been studying adoption online for months and stated that though it puts power back into the hands of the adoptive and birth parents, there are risks involved. The support of an adoption agency or an attorney is necessary and there comes the risk of online scammers.
The Citrons turned to Craigslist after failed attempts of advertising themselves and going as far as creating their own website with an 800 number for mothers to call. Luckily, Nelson, who was in an abusive relationship at the time and having trouble financially supporting her son, gave the Citrons a call after seeing the ad online.
“When I Googled it, I put adoption in Phoenix and the first was a Craigslist for Dan and Tracey, it was literally that quick,” Nelson said. “I said, ‘Hi, I’m pregnant, and I need help and this is the situation, what do you think?’ And she said, ‘I’m really happy you called us.’ It was perfect.”
Nelson is grateful to the Citrons and is happy Ben has “a family that loves him and he has all the opportunities in his life.”
