As we celebrate the amazing accomplishment of Olympic Gold with Gabby Douglas we had to share this video. Below you’ll see former Olympian Dominique Dawes in tears as she expresses her joy for young, Gabby Douglas. Our favorite portion of this interview is when she mentions that she can take down the fact that she was the only African-American [gymnast] with a gold medal, from her website.
View the video below, and let us know what you think about it in the comments section. Also, let us know if you remember when Dominique was the Gabby of the 1996 Olympics and how much we loved her too.
Briana Myricks says
I wanted to be Dominique growing up, when I saw her in the 96 Olympics. I thought it was amazing that someone who looked like me was doing such amazing things in the Olympics. And now, other young girls can aspire to be Gabby. I’m so proud of her!
Tay says
Omg Briana I thought I was the only one! When I saw Dominique in the Olympics she made me feel like I could do anything! Still love you Dominique and congrats Gabby D!!!

this is beautiful.

This is awesome! After watching Gabby’s win last night my 12-year old daughter said, “Daddy, the next Olympics is 2016…I can be in it then.” I am sure there are plenty of people just as emotional as Dominique, and plenty of other little 12-year old black girls believing they can now do it. Great experience, great story, and more greatness to come!
JOSEPH HARGRAY says
what i like about your daughters comment was when she said she Can be in the Olympics she didnt say IF so I will be looking to see her in the OLYMPICS
Debbie says

I followed Dominigue through her gymnastic years. She was elegant, and talented and an extraordinary person then and now she continues to be. The advice she has given Gabby Douglas is priceless. I am sure Gabby will listen and follow Dominigue as a mentor. Thank you Dominique for sharing.

I watched Dominique Dawes’ ’96 Olympic floor performance and I have never to this day seen anyone do those flips and turns as she did, she was like a bolt of lightning, simply awesome to watch and all I could say at the time I was watching Dominique was…Wow! Now, here comes Gabrielle (“Gabby”) Douglas and I get another chance to see such form of beauty and strength again…they are both elegant dancers only they do it in a different format, like on the vaults, uneven bars, balance beams and in floor performances…what an inspiration they both are to young girls of any nationality who wants to pursue gymnastics…Go for it, the sky is the limit as Dominique and Gabby has shown you all! Loved Dominique’s interview, it was very heartfelt and her words of wisdom to Gabby were priceless…put our Creator “first and foremost”…He will never disappoint you, but “man” will! Dominique you are truly a beautiful “Black Woman” inside and out!

This is what I’m talking about, SHARE THE LOVE AND LIFT EACH OTHER UP! Domonique was my favorite gymnast during her time, I LOVED how she represented African Americans and Americans and was BEYOND proud of her. I was so thrilled to see Gabby go out there and MAKE HISTORY with some doubters and even small negative comments from some people. Dominque words were GOLDEN. With so much bad representation of black women, both Domonique and Gabby are CLASS ACTS and represent in a positive way. I LOVE IT and I LOVE both of these women. Again congrats to our baby girl, our GOLDEN girl…Gabby!
Shan says
I love watching both of them Dominque and Gabby. They are DYNAMATIC
Chico says
She shouldn’t take it down but just rephrase it. What I didn’t like back then was when they gave credit to Keri Strug for bringing the medal home when Dominique gave solid performances throughout the entire competition
BLIZZ says
What Wonderful advice Dominique gave to Gabby, I totally agree with Dominique it’s more NERVE racking watching than performing. Dont you think after the third round it was a done deal. Well i had that much confidence in Gabby, WELL DONE….

Dominique, I remember you so well and how my husband and two daughters were glued to the television watching you as you walked away with the Gold Medal. We were so proud of you. Gabby gave me that same thrill. I viewed your interview, and again, became proud of you as you so professionally spoke of a fellow medalist. I, especially, loved it when you expressed to your young gymnist sister, Gabby, to remain steadfast and always go to God for direction in whatever she does. God bless you both in all your endeavors.
Judy says

I am so happy to have witnessed both historic moments with Dominique and Gabby making history for African Americans in the sports of gymnastics, but most importantly as Christians who don’t compromise the gospel of Jesus Christ. Like Dominique said, as long as Gabby keeps God first, He will never leave nor forsake her : )

True sportsmanship and more importantly and significantly true humanity!

I watched Dominique in the 96 Olympics and I never took my eyes off her. I was good in gymnastics but never as graceful as her and now to see Gabby come back and do this just made me cry all over again. I am so proud to show our young ladies that they can achieve Gold status if they work hard. Sometimes you have to leave your parents side to fulfill your dreams
