Have you ever wondered why Hollywood doesn’t green-light more films with majority black casts? In the video below Star Wars creator George Lucas breaks down the business of Hollywood in a candid manner that you normally don’t hear. He explains how his new film, Red Tails, based on the Tuskegee Airmen took 23 years to make it to theaters because it doesn’t contain a white protagonist.
Let us know what you think in the comments section after viewing.

Welp… it surely can’t get any plainer than this!

He broke it down for those who didn’t already know. Loved how he wasn’t beating around the bush either.

i appreciate what george lucas was able to do and glad that he finally did it! it’s good to see a movie that shows the greatness of our own cultural heroes…something to let our young men know that greatness can be achieved no matter what the enemy throws our way!

G.Lucas …. one of my childhood heroes and still is. I’m glad he keeps making films that allow our kids to dream. 🙂 Cant wait to support this film on opening weekend!!

I’m glad George Lucas didn’t gloss over this Hollywood issue. Let’s support this movie…for our children’s sake.

There was a previous movie about the Tuskegee Airmen that included Larry Fishburne, Malcolm Jamal Warner, Allen Payne, Cuba Gooding Jr. and others. I have met several Tuskegee Airmen since that movie but I am glad that it is coming out again with more fanfare. This is an American story of heroism and not just a story that only history buffs or black families should be aware of. George put racism on the front page and imagine what a lot of black actors go through if it took George with his clout this long to accomplish an American tale my goodness that effort that it must take just to be in film. Enjoyed the interview, can’t wait for the movie.

I was going to say the same thing. I remember watching the movie ‘The Tuskegee Airmen’ years ago on TV, and it was quite good (the realism of war is portrayed as well).
With the better technology + G. Lucas + bigger budget + the thrill of watching fighter planes dogfight (I love watching History Channel’s ‘Dogfights’ [https://www.history.com/shows/dogfights/videos]), hopefully this one’s even better than the ’90s version.

I’ve been getting a LOT of emails about this as I’m a mocha mom. I was excited about it, and I’m not sure that I’m as excited about it with George Lucas behind it because I don’t think he’s the greatest director ever, but he is a wonderful story teller. That being said…it’s about time that someone just lays it bare and talks about the real issue of getting a film made. This is information that everyone should know and as a person in the music business, I deal with this al the time. Black doesn’t always sell–even to black people. Frankly, I’m going to go try to see it, even though I have girls, for just as much to help make it a success so more films like this can get made.

My husband and mom were super amped about this movie but I was worried it was going to be a bit corny because of the previews. This interview completely got me excited to go see it. Opening weekend at that!
Lamar says
I feel the same way. After seeing the interview I definitely want to check it out in theaters now and support. Even though I know this is probably why he did the interview, to get black folks riled up and behind the film. It worked.

I am not a fan of star was, but I hear Mr. Lucas loud and clear. We NEED so desperately to support this film.

Amen to all previous comments. Several churches in our community is renting out a theater several weeks in a row so each of their congregation get a chance to see it!!

I’m thrilled to know that George Lucas made such a crucial attempt to give this story justice. Bravo!

Hallelujiah!!! I am so happy that this has been made. As a mother of a little boy who is not yet old enough to enjoy this (21 months), I am going to have to bring all of my friends to see this opening weekend because I want Hollywood to continue to make movies about black heroes. My son should be able to grow up to see himself on screen.
Joseph Polk says
It takes a George Lucas to tell a great story like Red tails to take our black airmen
Charlene Taylor says
I applaude George Lucas for persevering to complete this movie. It’s a story that needs to be told,it’s history that has been ignored. Thank you George Lucas!!!!!!

Sad a movie about heros that happened to be black hollywood said was not green enough to support. But rap videos of young black men talking about having sex smoking weed drinking liquor, womenizing ect ect is supported in the finest quality of video . Wake up black people having a black president does not mean we are all equal.
Denise Marcia says
Cuba Gooding Jr’s unscripted comments on People’s Choice Awards last night piggy backs on Lucas’s. Hollywood’s house of cards begins to tumble…
BROWNIE says
I will be there at opening weekend for this what I believe will be magnificent film…

i’ve been going through this in my head about these courageous black men!!! all ways being minimized our contributions to this country!!! sometime we run the risk of alienating the other cultures! some people think we as black are complaining over spilled milk, like the other cultures never went through anything!!! we not saying that just we have been the base of this countries success and prosperity!!! let the truth be told!!!! ma. steve
