It’s funny how a song can completely transport me back to a very specific time. The right song can engage every one of my senses. I automatically know what I was seeing, hearing, what was going on around me, exactly how I felt, even the outfit that I was wearing at that exact moment. There are quite a few songs that take me back to our early dating days, but the one that I label “our song” without a doubt is Usher’s Lovers and Friends.
I know that with Lil’ John screaming “I’s been knowing ya for a long time, shorty” on the track that it is not the most romantic or loving song in the world by far (I’m an 80s baby, we didn’t have all those good old school love songs by the time I reached adulthood!) but as soon as I hear it I am back in the club in downtown Baltimore at the end of the night. We had only been seeing each other for a little over a month at that point. I was there with my friends and he was with his. When Lovers and Friends started playing he found me on the dance floor and as we danced I felt like there was nowhere else in the world that I would rather be. It doesn’t matter how mad I am at him or what else I happen to be doing at the time, if I hear that song to this day for me, its automatic butterflies.
I know I’m not the only one. Tell us your song!

When my husband and I met, Mariah Carey’s “Vision of Love” was brand spanking new, and everyone was surprised by her big voice and the question of whether she was black or not. Everytime I hear it, I remember listening to it on the train between Paris and Calais, and almost missing the boat across the channel. Oh yeah, and getting calls from the front desk in Berlin because our “celebrations”‘ were too loud…
I can’t think of a song that takes me back to when my husband and I met, but I can think of one that takes me back to when we got married. The songs were older than the year we got married, but every time we hear them, whether in public or private we steal longing glances at one another. LOL
“Say Yes,” by Floetry and “The Truth” by India.Arie
Babyface’s “Whip Appeal” has been me and my husband’s song since 1989…the year we met.
“Truly” by Lionel Ritchie (Commodores) was our first dance song and whenever I hear it, I’m right back on that dance floor in his arms.
“They Don’t Know” by Jon B. I met him when I was in college and we ran in the same circles. We’d had short conversations at a bunch of different events, so one night at a party, I worked up the nerve to ask him to dance. We danced together for the rest of the night and “They Don’t Know” was the first song we danced to.
In our early dating months our song was “Sexy Love” by Ne-Yo. I remember one day saying to him he made the hairs on my neck stand up with just one touch.. and he replied, I was thinking the same thing.. the year was 2006 and every time Sexy Love was playing we were dancing!! Even 4 years later..
Back in the days around sixty, and the seventy, yeah! Grady Knight, and the Pips,”Midnight Train to GA”,Al Green,”Love and Happiness”,I’m going back to old school,,and whenever i heard this song,my old bones, try to do a little something, as i would say,cut a rug….Earth, Wind and Fire, That’s The Way Of The World,I start to screaming, that my song, you don’t know nothing about that…those are my favorite songs, and each one bring back different remembrance….but the one that touch my heart with my first puppy love, was Curtis Mayfield,Only You Babe…when i hear that voice, chill went over my body, that was the days…
OOh La La La by Teena Marie and Tonights the Night by Blackstreet. I remember that time WELL!!!!!1
“Let’s Chill” by Guy. Now, I met my husband in 2003, but he refused to let go of that late 80s/early 90s R&B. He made me a mix CD with a bunch of songs on it when we were just friends. I should have known something was up because “Let’s Chill” was on there, as well as some songs by Sylk. But when I hear that song, yup it takes me back. Great post!

Tara@The Young Mommy Life, you have the BEST NAME!!!!!
Just this weekend, I was taken back to the first time I ever danced with a boy, Joseph Ward. It was MJ’s I Wanna Rock With You. Thirty-one years ago and I remember the giddy nervous excitement I felt like it happened last night.
Me and my baby’s song was “Be without You” Mary J. Blige. Also the entire Omarion album his first one… that was our love making music…LOL
Although I rarely went “clubbin” back then …FORTUNATELY, that’s where we met. A few drinks later, we were on the dance floor when Usher “She’s a Bad Girl” tuned in. Now, whenever we hear that song on the radio or visit that club, which religiously plays that song, no matter where I’m at, we find each other on the dance floor and I “model” for him. Who cares about eyes staring… it’s only me & him. “YEAH!”<–Usher voice. lol
