Last night was interesting to say the least. Me and TheMom were met with the utmost frustration because we felt like Palin didn’t answer one measly question. On the other hand we thought Biden did a good job of being very detailed. Every question he was asked he layed out a detailed plan for the Obama/Biden camp and then drew contrast between their plan and McCain’s. Below you’ll find analysis from two sites and video of the entire debate.
BMWK, what did you think of last nights debate, who do you think won and why? Did you even watch it, did it hold your interest? See the entire debate here:

Terrible! She came prepared to recite whatever she wanted on the topic and not answer questions. No respect to the viewer.
TheDad says
@maria- Exactly. I couldn’t believe it when she said I’m not going to answer the question the way you may want me to. So basically you won’t answer the question that is asked at all. I think Biden did a good job of being so detailed that it pointed out even more that she didn’t answer anything.
Lipstick Republican says
Sarah, you got it right! Basically she was debating a presidential nominee who should have cleaned her clock but didn’t. She was talking to the American people and not about the American people!! We love you Sarah and are looking foward to November.
For those who say that Sarah doesn’t have the worldly experience because she has been Mayor of Washilla(sp) and Governor of Alaska let me ask you what experience did Mr. Clinton bring to the office of President – yep, you’re right, Govenor of Arkansas; so do not tell me she doesn’t have the experience to be President if you overlook Clinton.
And I cannot for the life of me understand why you would put someone in office that has only been in the Senate 143 days before he started running for President!!!!?????!!! How do you swallow that pill, please tell me…
Signed,
Lipstick Republican
TheDad says
@ Lipstick Republican- Thanks for the comments. I was hoping we’d get a republican POV and I can respect that. But… I think everyone on the Palin side is viewing this debate as did she hold her own instead of did she win. I think the Katie Couric interviews lowered the bar so far that she couldn’t have done that bad and would look much better than those. I told my wife (TheMom) last night that she wouldn’t have that type of performance because she would be better prepared for the questions but at the end of the night I think Biden did a better job and actually answered the questions. It seemed to me when Palin was asked something she went totally off topic to what she wanted to talk about. If she wants to do that she should have a press conference. The point of a debate is to debate the topics.
Becky says
Mrs. Palin had been very well coached on topics. I thought it rude that she did not consider the procedure of the debate important enough to follow. I was annoyed at her refusal to answer questions put to her. I take exception to her attempt to infer that she is like me just because she is a woman. She appears to be uneducated, speaks badly and I wonder sometimes if she’s read anything beyond romance novels.
St. Lucie says
Governor Palin clearly won the debate on the way she connected to the everyday, hardworking American people. Sen. Biden made several statistical errors about the roll of the vice president and the Constitution, and about the way Sen. McCain voted. I counted at least 10 untruths from Sen. Biden.
blue wisconsin says
lipstick republican, wake up, she didn’t answer a single question! you know how many people reside in Alaska….about 600,000. Now Wisconsin is a small state (5 million), but we have more people in the city of Milwaukee than there are in the whole state of Alaska, so she’s about as qualified as our mayor to be vice president or president. Look, the American people who voted for Barack vetted him, if you have questions about whether Obama is qualified to president, look at his campaign. No one in this race has run a better campaign than Obama. He beat the establishment in the democratic party, he beat the Clintons, and he will beat Mccain/Palin, who have yet to offer us an issue that they are running on other than telling us they are mavericks every chance they get.
Sean says
There’s a hidden camera here…right?? I sit slack jawed that anyone who actually ties their own shoes didn’t notice that Sara Palin, if she didn’t outright avoid answering a question at all with anything relevant, had very little intelligent comment… but I have to say that I did thank the lord almighty that she didn’t say ‘hockey mom’ at any time… as I would have actually dove through my tv in an attempt to stop her!
Jason says
I think if she had said the word “also”, and out of context just one more time, I would have leaped through the TV screen and set fire to the stage! She forfeited all rights to claim a win, when she told the moderator that she intended to answer questions her way, not as viewers demand. She then went on to be indirect and evasive in answers!
KRW says
Sarah Palin was clearly told what to say last night. She continued to say that McCain was a maverick. She tried to make herself sound like she knew what she was talking about. It seemed as if everytime she was given a question she dodged it and would not even answer it. She was also un-professional by calling Joe Biden only by his first name and trying to sound like “an Everyday American.” As a VP you need to be at your utmost performance at all times and I believe during the debate she was not. Joe Biden was clearly the winner because he knew what he was talking about and seemed very professional.
Gina says
CNN’S POLL on the debate differs dramatically from other polls, so take it with a grain of salt. Palin is running for V.P … let’s take a look at the qualifications, judgement, and experience of Obama, who is running for President. Obama had 25 years to fulfill the potential he displayed as a rising start at Harvard Law School … and, how did he live up to that potential? He chose to align himself with anti-American racist, Jeremiah Wright for TWENTY YEARS … along with Ferrahkan, Rezko, Ayers, and others. As a community organizer, he registered thousands of voters in Chicago … then, when he ran for the state legislature, he took away their votes, by disqualifying his opponent (a black woman) on a technicality. As a U.S. Senator, he voted present 160 times … he never called a meeting on the Afghanistan committee he chaired (although he NOW says we must shift all our military from Iraq to Afghanistan). He claimed Foreign Policy experience from a 9 day whirlwind photo op to 6 countries. And, he spent almost half of his tenure neglecting his responsibilities as a U.S. Senator, so he could run for President. Senator McCain served America honorably for 22 years in the military. He proved his love for America, as well as his honor, integrity and character, by refusing early release as a P.O.W., even while being tortured. He served America as a ‘contributing’ U.S. Senator, working across the aisle, for 20 years. Governor Palin will learn the details of the current national and international issues … but, what Obama never learned is Character. He can’t be trusted … ask Jeremiah Wright, Rezko and Ayers. The American people can recognize ‘real’ character and integrity in McCain and Palin, and that’s why she won the debate by 87% on the FOX text messaging poll.

JOE BIDENS 14 LIES TOLD AT THE DEBATE WITH PALIN:
1. TAX VOTE: Biden said McCain voted “the exact same way†as Obama to increase taxes on Americans earning just $42,000, but McCain DID NOT VOTE THAT WAY.
2. AHMEDINIJAD MEETING: Joe Biden lied when he said that Barack Obama never said that he would sit down unconditionally with Mahmoud Ahmedinijad of Iran. Barack Obama did say specifically, and Joe Biden attacked him for it.
3. OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING: Biden said, “Drill we must.†But Biden has opposed offshore drilling and even compared offshore drilling to “raping†the Outer Continental Shelf.â€
4. TROOP FUNDING: Joe Biden lied when he indicated that John McCain and Barack Obama voted the same way against funding the troops in the field. John McCain opposed a bill that included a timeline, that the President of the United States had already said he would veto regardless of its passage.
5. OPPOSING CLEAN COAL: Biden says hes always been for clean coal, but he just told a voter that he is against clean coal and any new coal plants in America and has a record of voting against clean coal and coal in the U.S. Senate.
6. ALERNATIVE ENERGY VOTES: According to FactCheck.org, Biden is exaggerating and overstating John McCains record voting for alternative energy when he says he voted against it 23 times.
7. HEALTH INSURANCE: Biden falsely said McCain will raise taxes on peoples health insurance coverage — they get a tax credit to offset any tax hike. Independent fact checkers have confirmed this attack is false
8. OIL TAXES: Biden falsely said Palin supported a windfall profits tax in Alaska — she reformed the state tax and revenue system, its not a windfall profits tax.
9. AFGHANISTAN / GEN. MCKIERNAN COMMENTS: Biden said that top military commander in Iraq said the principles of the surge could not be applied to Afghanistan, but the commander of NATOs International Security Assistance Force Gen. David D. McKiernan said that there were principles of the surge strategy, including working with tribes, that could be applied in Afghanistan.
10. REGULATION: Biden falsely said McCain weakened regulation — he actually called for more regulation on Fannie and Freddie.
11. IRAQ: When Joe Biden lied when he said that John McCain was “dead wrong on Iraqâ€, because Joe Biden shared the same vote to authorize the war and differed on the surge strategy where they John McCain has been proven right.
12. TAX INCREASES: Biden said Americans earning less than $250,000 wouldnt see higher taxes, but the Obama-Biden tax plan would raise taxes on individuals making $200,000 or more.
13. BAILOUT: Biden said the economic rescue legislation matches the four principles that Obama laid out, but in reality it doesnt meet two of the four principles that Obama outlined on Sept. 19, which were that it include an emergency economic stimulus package, and that it be part of “part of a globally coordinated effort with our partners in the G-20.â€
14. REAGAN TAX RATES: Biden is wrong in saying that under Obama, Americans wont pay any more in taxes then they did under Reagan.

Sarah Palin did not win the VP debate, her answers were evasive, she chose to answer only the questions she had answers to. I do not want a president that is only as smart as I am, I expect for my President and Vice President that can rise above the everyday Joe and be productive. I expect my canadiate to understand me but God Please let him or her be smarter than the average American. I am so dissappointed in Palin, her fragility is one of the reasons that women have a hard time breaking the glass celining. If you want to play with the big boys then you should be able to play like the big boys. A little sarcasm should hurt Sarha she should be able to take it like a man. Sarah shouldn’t have been treated any different than any other politician. If she is to fragile to be interviewed and take criticism then she’s too fragile to be VP.
auntiegirl says
that should have been a little scarcasm shouldn’t hurt Palin
Rob says
She proved once again why both sides of our traditionally Republican family will be voting for Obama. The McCain campaign wanted to set her expectations low on purpose so they could use the propaganda phrase that ‘she did better than expectations.’ You can tell she was simply reading scripted points and she even went off topic multiple to work those pre-meditated thoughts in. No wonder all the swing-states are going for Obama…McCain and Palin just keep sinking. Our sons won’t be dieing in one of thier senseless wars…no thank you.
MarriedToIt says
I was so tried to the maverick comment. Her reasoning was exactly what the Obama/Biden ticket are. They don’t agree on everything. They each have individual opinions. Something she attempted to use against them but said it was why her and McCain were perfect.
She didnt answer on question and it really looked like she was trying to remember a script. All the corny folksy talk was grating on my nerves. Does America really need vocabulary dumbed down to get a point. I want people in office who don’t have a limited vocab. I need you to use your SAT vocabulary wisely.
I attempted to go in with an open mind and spirit but I couldnt. I’ve said before I was a teacher and have coached debate for serveral years. She didn’t look at ease. It came across as practiced and point blank she did not answer the questions.

wow, after reading some of the post here, I see most of the people, not all, posting here are idiots. Biden answered the questions in typical democratic fashion. He told you what he wanted you to hear. The fact is, he will raise taxes on americans, unless you condiser anyone making over 250K not to be american. Please tell me why they should pay a higher tax rate than anyone else.Oh, wait, they make more money so they are basically required to pay a higher percentage. thats horse crap. The bottom line is if you raise taxes on any segment of the population you hurt the economy and our country. Thats a stupid point of view to tax the rich. who do you think owns companies that provide jobs and put revenue into the local and national market. It amazes me that people wonder why jobs end up going overseas, its simple math. if it cost a company more to operate in a given area it will seek friendlier areas to do business.
As for Biden and Obama, if they get elected then we are going to be in much worse shape than we are now, and if you do not believe that then you fell and hit your head on something very hard. Palin is a breath of fresh air into the national political scene, a much needed one. Our country needs change but not the kind of change Obama and Biden will bring. They will only dress-up the same ole pig with a new dress and call it beautiful. heck, they won’t even have to put lipstick on it.
Ironballls says
I’m reading the news and can’t believe the commentary is so positive for Palin. I’m shocked. Clearly it’s a popularity contest between a smart politician and a hot soccer mom. She has no grasp of the issues. She could barely answer a question coherently. This country is doomed if McCain and Palin take over from Bush. I live in a country of morons. I’m independent but this sealed the deal. McCain clearly chose the image rather then the substance when he chose Palin. That’s not how I want the next president to make decisions. Obama and Biden are smart guys. I’m so frustrated. Reminds me of Bush when he debated. He could barely talk also but people are so blinded by image.
DaveinSouthcarolina says
Why don’t any of the canidates talk about a flat tax. An across the board flat tax rate that you pay no matter what your income. A tax with no loopholes for folks to escape paying thier fair share of the burden. Another thing you could do is remove the handout based “earned Income Credit” part of the tax code and stop giving people monet they do not deserve. Now lets see one of these canidates jump on that idea.
MarriedToIt says
ok i went back and read some more comments. I think a few of you all need to pull out your copies of the Constitution. It VPs roll is very specific and expanding it is un-Constitutional.
I don’t think she connected with the average American. Heck I’m the average American and I felt like I was being talked down too.
@ GIna- I cannot believe you are bring up Rev. Jeremiah Wright. What is so un-American about voicing your opinion? It is American to point out the issues our choices as a nation raise to the rest of the world. Its what the country was founded on contray to popular belief. It is ok to question and challenge the people we put in office. It should be encouraged but sadly people are being crucified for doing what everyone should.
Ok I’m done. People who were supports of the Rep. ticket are still supporting it. I don’t think the debates changed much

She did not win the debate. It’s obvious she was reciting. She does not understand the issues nor the questions. And why use the word “Also” so much in her sentences. It drives me crazy (to put the word Also at the end)?? I didn’t understand what she was talking about. She talked fast (or faster than other interviews). Seem like she had a list of things that she was told to talk about. And stop it with the “Energy” and “the Alaska” thing. This is all she knows and wants to talk about all the time. I agree with – auntiegirl – I don’t want an average american running our country!! I will not vote for her. She is only good for small town offices. (oh, my husband say, she became the governor of Alaska, maybe bc she was the better looking person there, no offense, but isn’t that true?)

i’m not sure why anyone is giving credit to sarah for “holding her own”. the credit clearly goes to biden who refrained from delivering knock out blows to save her from appearing foolish. we all know what biden is capable of and sarah was merely rattling off memorized lines that she just learned two days ago. he could have tripped her up at any time if he’d have liked to. she appeared very nervous at the beginning… her voice shook.. she sounded like a robot. it was not good.
biden was a complete gentleman. i admire him for not sinking her as he so easily could have. he even called her “gov palin” instead of her pathetic, “say it aint so, joe”. he is a wonderful person and i like him even more for that.

How about this tax idea—- if you work more than one job- they should only tax your primarily (1st job) income– additional jobs, second job, or whatever people may do for additional money SHOULD NOT get taxed!! at all…..
About the debate– Palin, did not answer any questions- off topic, spoke about what she wanted- no clarity- did not make any sense, seems like she was making a joke about everything–This is NOT a funny matter— She is a PUPPET, no thoughts of her own- Where did she learn how to speak?? Can it get any dumber than BUSH? I guess Palin Proves that
roberta says
@DaveinSouthcarolina – the trickle down effect doesn’t work… bottom line. mccain is for keeping offshore accounts where rich americans hide that money.
it’s a fact that bush has an approval rating around 27%. abysmal. it’s a fact that mccain’s policies are no different than bush on the topics most americans care about. it’s a fact that palin has no opinion at all other than what is told to her by mccain so she is just a carbon copy of mccain who models himself after bush.
it’s a fact that just as late as july, she was asked her opinion on issues of the world and she could never reply. her response was always that she was concentrated on alaska. she simply doesn’t have it going on upstairs, nor the interest… and if anyone supports her performance last night, it really calls your judgment into question. simply getting through a debate is not presidential.
biden was very sweet to her. if anyone deserves the credit, it would be biden for not attacking as he so easily could have.
Gal_from California says

I’m finding it hard to believe that some people think that Palin won this debate. It’s true, she didn’t implode on the dtage, but she hardly came across as being and informed candidate. The whole folksy hockey mom joe six pack routine has not played well with the average voter. The average voter is not as stupid as McCain/Palin tend to believe. WE know when someone is genuine and when someone is playing to the crowd. Her performance to me looked like a beauty pagaent performance, stick to the script and keep smiling.
Here is the part of the debate that I remember most. After It was clear that Biden and Palin agreed on the same sex marriage issue, and Biden clearly said that they were both in agreement, Ifill asked Palin if she was in agreement with Biden. Did you see how long it took her to answer that question? Sje didnt even realize the Biden agreed with her stance and she was afraid to say that she agreed with Biden. Ifill had to tell her after her long drawn out anser that the two did in fact agree in the issue.
Was I the only one that thought that was a weird moment of the debate?

To Daveinsouthcarolina,
Why those who make more should pay more.
Our government asks 18 and 19 year olds to put their lives on the line in wars and consider them patriots, deserving of all respect. who gives more, the soldier or someone asked to give a little more of their income? Our soldiers are giving up their families and futures to protect our country.
What happened to country first or do those making more than $250,000 a year have more patriotism buying that new car or trinket on their arm.
MEN AND WOMEN ARE DYING IN IRAQ. what is a few dollars compared to a life.
It is evident you don’t make that type of money (“why should they pay a higher tax rate”) Keep arguing for other peples money if you want to.
Canada says
Sara Palin did not win this debate! It was like she studied for a test and some of the stuff on the test she didn’t study, so she just replaced the question with what she did study.
Joe Biden was a gentlemen. He could have made her look bad, but he didn’t have to. He actually answered the questions and had so much more substance! He used his air time wisely to highlight that the Obama/Biden ticket actually has a plan.
I think Sara Palin has a lot of potential. The problem is that any good ideas she has will not get a voice. McCain has her completely scripted and sheltered so far. She is so afraid to go off script that she simply won’t answer questions that she does not have a pre prepared response for.
Obama chose Joe Biden to help him to see an issue from many sides. Obama didn’t want someone who would just agree with everything. The Governor seems terrified to disagree with her boss!
You may wonder why I would have such opinions when I am not even an American. The thing is, we have such ties to your economy, that decisions made by your leadership have an impact here. The majority of the people I know are hoping for an Obama/Biden win. Obama is a man of vision. He and Biden are working on the issues and making solid plans while McCain is still singing the same misleading tunes. For example, Obama’s plans to engage in talks with leaders of Iran, Korea, etc have been clarified. Call it a flip flop or whatever you want…the fact is, Obama would not engage in talks without preconditions. Even if his initial answer was naive, he has since clarified his position on this. McCain/Palin are focused on Gaffs while Obama/Biden are blowing by them on the real issues.
Gal_from California says
To LA P – I notice that too.. that she was repeating about “agreeing with Bidden on the same sex issue”.. she really sounds like a beauty queen pagaent candidate than a vp candidate. I hope average voter is not that dump.

Gal_from California says
@Canada – agreeing with you – The Governor seems terrified to disagree with her boss!
Obama made a good VP choice. Bidden will help him!!
Huemanity says
Wow, a lot of diverse thought. I like that.
I would classify myself as an independent conservative. I have voted for Democrats and Republicans (Gore in 2000, Bush in 2004).
I think Palin did exactly what she felt like doing. The press has been playing “gotcha” with her since she was announced as VP. Everyone makes a big deal about her Couric interview but I didn’t see anything she did as being terrible. A VP candidate should not endorse any American publication which is why she didn’t name the papers she reads. Naming names would automatically link her to a publication and its potential political leanings. It was a trick, and she knew it. No one ever asked Obama what he reads or if he can name all of DaVinci’s paintings. That question was bait.
Same with the Supreme Court cases – the question wasn’t “name one supreme court case” – it was “name one decision you disagree with and why?” Again, another trick. If she names a case then she’s undermining the SCOTUS, a body she obviously respects a great deal. What difference does it make if she disagreed with it? It’s settled law at this point. It has no bearing on whether or not she can be VP. We already know she is a conservative, why make her name a supreme court case like it’s a pop quiz in high school?
If Obama had been treated this way, black folks would be defending him left and right. But because Palin is a conservative and a woman with traditional values – she’s an idiot.
I think she did win last night because unlike a lot of snotty intellectuals, most American people just want to know what you plan to do for them. They don’t care if you can name legislation, supreme court cases, or world leaders. There are plenty of politicians that can do that and do jack squat for Americans. Her job, if elected, is to serve the people, not the media or people with master’s degrees.
Also, in most countries where women have risen to high political power, the women were conservatives.
Huemanitys last blog post..gDiapers Revolutionizes Diaper Waste
LA P says
Huemanity – Palin is not an idiot because she is a woman with conservative views. She is an idiot because she is clueless about life outside of Alaska. She makes no attempt to gain any knowledge, so she just attacks with irrelevant one liners and folksy mannersims to mask the fact taht she is clueless. To me Palin comes across as a woman that has always gotten by on her looks and when called on it, plays the sympathy card. Today she is complaining about her treatment by Kaite Curic, saying that she was in a no win situation. If she can’t handle an interview with Katie Curic then we don’t dare turn her lose on the rest of the mean old world out there.
Palin will spend the rest of the campaign on FAUX News and rant and rave like O’Reilly until the election is finally over. If there is any justice, the people of Alasks will she her for the sham that she is and her political career there will end as well.

To Jerry:
I understand what you are saying except it makes no sense to tax anyone because they make more money. You would be surprized how much money I do make, not all people in the south are poor. As for the example you gave, we do not have a draft going on right now, and probably will never see that agin unless the military situation changes dramatically. Those young people are not forced to join but do so voluntarily, in fact I have a friend who just joined at the age of 32. So your example holds to revelence to what I posted.
What happened to Taxation without representation. Apparently you enjoy paying taxes or you would be defending the government taking your money before you even get it.
To Roberta:
yes, the trickle down does work and works very well as our current state proves. Democratic supporters always want to mention, either directly or indirectally, the clinton era. During clintons time in office, he raised taxes to the highest level ever in the history of our nation. he then cut military spending to the point that our soldiers did not have the equipment that they needed. By doing that he posted a budget surplus, and patted himself on the back. Sudan offered us Bin Laden after the embassy attacks, where americans died, and he did not take him. If he had we just may not be in the postiotion we are now. Clinton only tried an attack at Bin Laden during the trail he was facing during the Monica Lewinsky Time to get the spotlight off of his own situation. You are seeing the far reaching effects of his taxation increase rearing its ungly now, almost 8 years after he left office. So, trickle down does work. I will say, its not completely all his fault, but he started the ball to rolling. Bush just really did nothing to stop it or slow it down. if the Bush tax cuts are remove them middle class, working people will suffere from it.
As for Palin, I think she did a good job against the washington brainwashed Biden. Some of you posting here would have not answered the question as well as she did, given the fact she was soeaking to the entire nation. Put yourself in her shoes. Biden is used to being cool during such things, he should be after 30 plus years of spending our money the way he and the rest of the democrats love too. I just read about an earmark to the bailout bill that gives a tax exempt freebie on the type of arrows that are used to teach archery. what does that have to do with bailing out the economy, absolutely nothing. Thats how stupid this bailout bill was. The banks over extended themselves by lending money to people with subprime credit that now cannot pay for thier homes. Homes they did not really have the credit to buy in the first place and pushed to do so because of the many manipulated home loan variations that are out there. get over the fact that not every american will have the nice house and car simply because of thier own choices about money and thier practices spending practices destroying thier credit. Those are choice we all make, good or bad.
