I’ve read a lot of articles, a couple books, and watched a lot of television and movies regarding marriage, not to mention being surrounded by married couples like my parents and grandparents.
One thing I’ve constantly heard is the importance of being spontaneous in your marriage. Many couples complain of boredom, predictability, and being tired of doing the same ol’, same ol’. What I learned first hand is how important routine is in a marriage. I’ve only been married for 7 months, but I’ve found that having a routine in your marriage can make things better.
It gives you something to look forward to, especially on days where so many things were out of your control. When you have a routine going at home, you know what to expect and you know how to handle it. After a long day at work where you were given every curve ball possible, coming home to some predictability can be just what you need to wind down. How many times have you come home feeling like you used up all your words or all your brain power? It may seem mind numbing on most days, but for the days when the world beats up on you, knowing what to expect at home is just the remedy.
Scheduling sex may seem lame to some couples, but for others, it’s absolutely necessary. Schedules get filled, people get busy, and then they don’t have time to get busy. There’s nothing wrong with a planned lovemaking session. If you have plans for a romantic evening, cancel all other plans, shut down your computers, turn off your phones, and make it about the two of you. That’s another thing to look forward to all day. Some of the best romantic moments with my husband has been on nights I planned on doing something special. Anticipation and anxiety can make for a hot night.
A regular date night is encouraged for all couples, new and old. Maybe you guys have a favorite diner you like to eat at, a breakfast spot you frequent, a beloved movie theatre, or have a game night. Since the NBA is finally back, hubby and I will be playing against each other in a fantasy league. That’ll definitely bring some friendly competition and a routine for at least 60+ games. My mom’s friend has Taco Tuesday with her hubby, which I’ve considered implementing too.
I’m not saying don’t have something unexpected happen, or don’t be spontaneous. You will definitely need that to keep the romance alive as well. All I’m saying is don’t rule out a schedule or a routine. What’s in your marital routine?

I agree. My husband is a college football coach and he is always busy with work (practice, recruiting, clinics, etc.) so we have lots of routine activites in our daily lives. Morning goodbye routines, date nights, goodnight routines, I could go on and on. And it has worked for us. We get excited when its time for them and its always fun to act like you forgot to see if the other will remind you. I can’t wait to add new routines when we have kids!
