#1. Stop using YouTube as the Bible on what to do with your daughter’s hair.

For example, a lot of natural hair bloggers totally condemn using grease on hair. For me, that does not work so I take that advice with a ‘grain of salt’. Instead of trusting YouTube’s many tutorials, I try and use common sense when doing her hair.
To point 1, I’d just like to say I have never come across any naturalista on youtube who would tell you not to put oil on your hair. Grease yes in the form of mineral oil and petroleum because it can clog your pores.
Youtube videos helped me a lot and gave me lots of pointers in my healthcare journey and my hair that used to be terribly damaged has recovered considerably. You just have to pick and choose what works for you from these videos.
I’m sorry but i have to see i don’t agree with you and the oil /grease comment . I have natural hair and all the you tube Videos i have watched not one of them has ever said don’t use Oil or Grease in your hair and i have watched thousands of them and most of them recommend all kinds of natural oils.
They say OIL but always no grease. She is correct they always talk bad about GREASE
One really important element that so many naturalistas forget is the kind of hair accessories to use! ALL hair accessories are based on PRESSURE and pressure, when not used properly, causes DAMAGE!! Elastics squeeze, rip and break hair. The Moni Poni spiral ponytail holder is the ONLY hair accessory that uses a unique method of holding hair which distributes pressure FROM THE INSIDE of the ponytail (even the smallest group of hair). So, it holds really, really well WITHOUT CAUSING BREAKAGE! I’d love to send you some samples for you to try because that’s what we’re all about – changing the way we hold our hair to keep our hair healthy and happy! Please contact me at [email protected] and I’ll be happy to send you samples for your blog.
I would like to know what you did did you mix the Shea and aloe together or aloe and water together in a spray bottle what grease did you use? I liked the article but the lack of detail has me puzzled no disrespect I’m learning myself I have a curly headed little boy which now since I’m going natural am learning how to take care of his hair bc it dries out so bad I do not want to use the same products if store bought on my daughters hair when I have her as I do my own unless I’m making them. Please elaborate.
I wanted know if irlt was ok just to use olive oil coconut oil and she butter on my daughters hair?
To be honest, since doing my BC in 2012, it’s been many videos of youtube that has helped educate me to get my hair back to natural health. None of them have ever encouraged not using oil or grease in your hair. But if the grease is full of parabens, petroleum, and mineral oil then no, grease with that in it should avoid being used if you want healthy growing hair. This may not be applicable for your hair type. But is most applicable to extremely dry kinky hair. So it’s not a negative encouragement, if we see it for what it is, as black people who have different types of hair, we’ll appreciate that grease with bad ingredients aids nothing healthy. Know your hair type and find what works for you. But bad ingredients in grease, is never really a good thing for anyone.
My go-to is a whipped shea butter mixture. I soften the butter in a bowl of hot water, add a tablespoon or so of castor oil, extra virgin olive oil, extra virgin coconut oil, vegetable glycerin, essential oils, and whip it all together with a hand mixer. My grandbaby was has problems with itching, so I add peppermint oil to a mixture for her. It helps and keeps the scalp cool. Make sure you put the butter in clean, dry jars. It makes a LOT because the whipping adds volume (I ended up with 2-1/2 10-ounce jars last night.) Shampooing is done with hand-made black soap. After shampooing, I spray a mixture of aloe vera juice, distilled water, a little vegetable glycerin, and peppermint oil, then put the butter on and style. Thinning spots and around the edges get sprayed with the aloe vera mix and straight castor oil. I stopped buying all the products…seems its always something new and now I really can’t afford them. This shea butter mixture can be used all over your body and can even be mixed with sugar or salt to make body scrubs.
I have looked at different stores where have you had the best luck finding products like glycerin and aloe with no alcohol in it
I am so happy I found your blog. My daughter is 18m and I started using Shea Moisture on her hair when she was 7 months old. Its natural and I see other mom’s use it on their daughters hair so no problem right? Wrong! Her hair was breaking off so much to where I couldn’t comb through it without getting clumps of hair in my hand. I bought some moisturizer for natural hair babies and her hair stop breaking but it keeps her her so dry. I totally for got about aloe vera juice, water, Evoo, shea butter.. the basics! I’m about to buy some today!
Hello,
I’m new to natural so when your saying you use a Shea butter mixture…is this something your mixing up yourself? What do I need? Also what type of shampoo conditioner leave in etc? I’m having the same issues you started out with on my sweet 23 month old. I don’t know what to do.
This really gave my hope! 🙂 I’m having the same problem with my 2 year old. Her hair looks exactly like you daughter (not as thick). However, I can tell that her hair being the way it is has an effect on her. She’s been calling herself bald so I knew I had to do something. I have taking this advice and bought these products. Thank you!

I agree with others regarding not using oil on our natural hair. I believe it’s a must for naturalista, but the kind of oil differs. Still I find this post interesting and informative. Thanks!

Hi. I am having the exact same issue with my daughter. To make matters worse, I also discovered a few months ago that she had been pulling out her hair as well. She will be in a wedding next spring and I am desperately searching for ways to help her hair grow before then Could you email me? I’d like to know more about the specific product and processes you used to yield your results. Sincerely, thanks!
