Kids may unknowingly see some adults as role models. These adults can be family, teachers or even celebrities. Many parents may be unaware their kids have role models, especially celebrities, because kids may never talk about them… but just follow their every move on social media. Some people may think kids should not have role models, so I’ve listed 3 reasons why I think they should.
1. Kids need to see how they should behave. When kids see the positive behavior of other teens and adults, they will see what is acceptable. This behavior should come from the parents since they are the first adults kids see. Eventually, they can begin to take on some of their parent’s behaviors good and bad, that’s why it’s important to have someone positive for the child to look up to.
2. Kids need to see how not to behave. When the not so positive behavior is seen, talked about and tweeted, hopefully kids will take note that that type of behavior is unacceptable and could be dangerous. Here is an opportunity for parents to talk to their kids about why they should avoid doing the bad things they see others doing and the consequences that go along with the behavior.
3. Kids will become role models. As kids see both positive and negative behavior in their family, friends and celebrities, they will develop their own personality, values and morals. Their behavior will be watched and copied by their siblings and younger family members and they too will become someone’s role model.
Unfortunately, not all parents are great role models for their kids; if the parent has bad habits, hopefully the child will do the opposite of what they see. A child will always look up to someone because that is the way they will learn how to function in society. As long as there is a mature positive adult in a child’s life, I don’t see anything wrong with him/her being a role model.
