If you’ve ever headed to your neighborhood toy store or even one of the big-box stores and been disappointed with the selection of dolls and toys that resemble your little one, know that you are not alone.
The good folks at Atlanta Post posted a round-up of five African-American toy companies that are looking to fulfill a need in the marketplace. Check out one below, Uzuri Kid Kidz:
Uzuri Kid Kidz offers consumers multicultural toys like The Pepper Doll to help kids of color embrace their own image. The company’s offering includes toys, party supplies and accessories that have cultural themes. The Uzuri Kid Kidz line contains a host of many loveable characters, including sisters Penny and Pepper, the ballerina detectives and friends, Princess Amira, Dancing Wendy and the Ballerina Babes.

I’m an African American male that has been in the Toy business since 1994 (8 yrs as a Target Stores Toy Buyer, 1994-2002). There has always been a lack of African American product/images in the toy business. Therefore, I applaud these companies in their efforts to fill this void. There is also a lack of African Americans as lead characters in the children’s book market. That’s why my cousin and I have created a children’s series book featuring our grandfather “Papa Lemon”.

As a mother of two black men I have always had the need for African American toys, now that i have grandkids, I wish to keep with the giving the same if not better toys and educational needs. I find it hard to find good resourceful items , the stores don’t offer much, therefore it is vital to keep searching and these sites are important.

I know of a good online store that sells african american toys made by african americans. Dolls mostly. Go to urbble.com. This store is growing everyday and I know the inventory is growing by the week. The toys are of high quality and pretty cheaply priced.
