Kevin Hayes, a 20 year old Bowie State college student, is suing the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity for alleged battery/hazing, false imprisonment and gross negligence. During a two month period, from September to November 2013, Hayes claims during these hazing sessions, he was punched, paddled, slapped, and bruised for 5 to 8 hours.
“It broke me down. It’s something I never felt before,” he said.

While Bowie State is not mentioned in the 17 page lawsuit, Alpha Phi Alpha is being sued for at least $3 millions dollars. He gives details about the punishments which included Jewel Shockers (side slaps), Back Racks (back slaps), Fat Joes (chest slaps), as well as taking “wood” (paddling) if he didn’t know the history of the fraternity.
“This type of stuff, it kills people and it needs to stop,” Bell said.
I also must add that Hayes isn’t just a student, but is very involved in campus life. As a Bowie State Junior, he currently serves as the executive member-at-large for Student Government Association for the 2014-2015 school year & the University of Maryland system’s Student Council for the 2014-2015 school year. He is also a member of the Maryland Army National Guard (since 2013).
“Bowie State University has a stringent anti-hazing policy that is coupled with a strong anti-hazing education program,” the university said. “The university considers hazing to be indefensible and contrary to the interest of the university community. We work continuously with Greek and other student organizations to assure understanding that no activity that causes mental, physical or social harm will be tolerated.”
BMWK, Do you think he is wrong to sue Alpha Phi Alpha?

I think some will be afraid to respond to this comment if they are involved with Fraternities or Sororities. Especially, if they have been hazed or participated in hazing. My response, Hayes is not wrong for seeking legal justice. Whatever that may amount to be and I’m not just talking about possible money. This is sad! A disgrace to the black society.

I think asking the question if he is wrong is outlandish. How is the victim of abuse wrong for standing up against an act that kills people. Wanting acceptance can allow a person to yield against their standards or even cloud judgement but what he describes is egregious. How does torment and cruelty make you belong?

It takes two months of allegedly getting abused to find out there’s a problem? I’m guessing the should’ve beat his ass more.
