Set the goal of putting God first in every aspect of your marriage
When I think of ‘black couple’ goals, I think of goals that have a long, meaningful effect on your overall relationship. Black love is beautiful because it is unconditional. The kind of love that cannot be stopped. With that being said, my number one goal for married couples is to have a relationship with God. When it comes to serving God in a marriage, think of it as a triangle. One of the first things we learn in school is that the shape has three corners—one at the top and two at the bottom. You and your partner are the two corners at the bottom, and God is the corner at the top. Your goal is to climb up that triangle for a closer relationship with God. He should be your primary focus.
Ladies, if your main focus is on God, every little thing your husband does will not drive you up the wall. Men, when your main focus is on God, not having a home-cooked meal because your wife got busy, will not piss you off. When God is in the center of your marriage, you both will have more patience with your kids. He should have your undivided attention.
This goal is an ongoing process. It requires discipline. To maintain this, consider being around other couples who are Christian. See if your pastor has marriage counseling sessions via zoom or skype. Join a life group at your church that focuses on marriage, who you surround yourself with plays a substantial role in how your marriage plays out. Make sure God surrounds you both.
Make sure your foundation of trust is solid
Without faith in each other, what do you have? Some people think that trusting your spouse means that you’re confident that neither one of you is cheating. Yes, knowing that you are the only one is essential, but it goes beyond that. Both of you should have faith in your spouse when it comes to other things. You should trust each other when it comes to making hard decisions. Trust that your husband knows you well enough to buy you the perfect gift for your birthday. Husbands should trust their wives when she is hanging out with her girlfriends.
Trusting each other aligns with the first goal mentioned. When God is the center of everything, then trusting each other is not difficult. Of course, you both will not agree on everything, and doubts will come and go, but God will lead you in the right direction.
The Romance in your relationship should always be intimate
Last and certainly not least, couples should set a goal of making sure the romance in their relationship is still close. Intimacy is so much more than just the physical realm between couples. However, a couples’ goals should center around the physical part of intimacy as well as the role of it. The two of you should be so connected that you know what each other is thinking. You can finish each other sentences, and being able to vibe no matter how far apart you are
Couples young and old should always feel as if they are still on a date. The honeymoon stage of their marriage should never fade away. Marriage is one of the hardest jobs a person could have, and it takes work day in and day out. Being on the same page, in the same chapter, and the same book is imperative for the marriage to work.
To keep that romance and intimacy going, consider trying something new together. Whether it be an art or cooking class. A unique vacation destination. Try something in the bedroom you’ve never tried before. Whatever it is, make sure you both are showing each other your undivided attention.
Setting goals with your husband or wife will not only keep a couple in the same book, but it also becomes a best seller. Their life story will be read by others forever. To achieve any goal for your relationship, you must be disciplined. Consistency is key. Also, make sure you both are on one accord. As long as you have our number one goal on your list, then any other aspirations you have will come true.
