A huge part of the reason why I enjoy working with BlackAndMarriedWithKids.com is because they do so much to uplift black families, and provide resources, encouragement and conversation on how to keep your family healthy and whole.
I try to do the same thing for young families through my blog, The Young Mommy Life. I had my daughter at 20, got married at 21 and had another baby at 22. In between all that, I graduated magna cum laude from journalism school, landed a position at the second-largest community foundation in the country and bought my first house. I was busy.
I know how hard it is to juggle everything, especially when you’re a parent and still in school. That’s why I launched the YML Scholarship on my blog last week. I’m in the final days of my first ever fundraising effort and we’ve got a little way to go to reach our goal of $500+ to split between two deserving moms as they head back to school this fall.
Some people might balk at supporting young mothers, saying that it’s not the community’s job to get them help, or we shouldn’t have to take responsibility for their choices.
To that I say, that it is our responsibility. No one makes it through this life alone, and the more supportive people you have in your corner, the greater the chances are for your story to have a happy ending.
I’m asking everyone to donate what you can, whether it’s $1, $5, or $10. If we help just one young mother get through school””just one“”we can feel that ripple effect through her kids, her extended family, and her friends.
If it takes a village, then let’s be the village.

Very inspiring! I too had a child during my Junior year of college. With the support of family and friends I went on to earn two teaching credentials. Young women out there need to know there are people rooting for them to succed and accomplish their goals!

Great effort on your part Tara. Glad that we could help to spread the word.. I challenge our readers to make a donation even if it’s just 1 dollar. You’ll spend more than that on a cup of coffee tomorrow.
