Lately there’s been a lot of talk about sex. An already hot topic amongst adults is now making its way to a kindergarten classroom near you, if you live in Chicago of course. For many parents the idea of their innocent five year old being taught about sex is a scary thought, but for Chicago, home of the “third-largest public school system in the country,” this will be their reality. While the sex ed curriculum for older children might explain in more depth topics such as reproduction and sexually transmitted diseases, for younger children it may be an opportunity to teach them about “good touch” and “bad touch.” Additionally parents who do not want their children participating do have the option of opting out. As reported by ABC news:
“Under the new policy, the youngest students — the kindergartners — will learn the basics about anatomy, reproduction, healthy relationships and personal safety. Through the third grade, the sex-ed lessons will focus on the family, feelings and appropriate and inappropriate touching. In the fourth grade, students will start learning about puberty, and HIV. Discussions will emphasize that the virus cannot be transmitted through everyday contact such as shaking hands or sharing food.”
It will be interesting to see if other school districts take Chicago’s lead, even in the wake of some parents voicing their concern. For more on this story visit ABC news.
