When I first saw the preview for For Better or Worse, the new sitcom based on the characters Angela (Tasha Smith) and Marcus (Michael Jai White) from Tyler Perry’s popular Why Did I Get Married movies, I wasn’t sure how I felt about it. While I thought the couple was good for some comic relief in the films, focusing an entire sitcom around a couple whose sole purpose in the movies was to bicker seemed to be a stretch. But I like Tasha Smith and it’s the relatively rare opportunity to see a black married couple on television so I decided to tune in.
In the first episode Tasha, a successful salon owner, is irate after Marcus’ young daughter from a previous relationship disrespects Tasha by calling her a name to Tasha and Marcus’ son. After finding out that the daughter’s disrespectful behavior was prompted by Marcus’ daughter’s mother Keisha, an angry Tasha confronts Keisha, the two get into a fist fight, and make up 30 seconds later. Meanwhile, Marcus finds out that Keisha is now dating a friend and colleague.
As I watched the first episode, and then the second, one nagging little thing was continuously on my mind.
WHERE IS THE LAUGH TRACK?! Excuse me if I seem nit-picky, but the laugh track is something I never notice until it’s obviously gone. I think that Perry’s nixing the laugh track and the three-camera set-up is his way of giving the show a more modern feel (think “The Game” instead of “House of Payne”) but the absence of laughter made the jokes feel awkward. Instead of having that modern feel of a show like The Office, I felt like I was watching a comedic stage play with no audience. Bring that track back Tyler Perry. ASAP.
Aside from the awkward silences, the show was mediocre. The premise it started with was a complex one. I was interested to see how dealing with the respect issue in a blended family would play out in a half -hour sitcom. But it seemed to go nowhere from there and turned in to standard TP fare even down to the inclusion of a loud fat woman who seemed to appear out of nowhere with the sole purpose of being rude and chubby.
I could think of one million ways for a show to have ended rather than having two grown women fighting out over a man and then laughing about it in the next scene. (Really? We’re giggling and chit chatting after you just choked me out and threw me across a table?) I’m all for conflict and drama in a story line that actually moves the plot along, but adding in a Real Housewives type of fight was unnecessary.
On the other hand, the show does have some potential. While I maintain that Marcus and Angela can’t carry an entire show on their own, they did introduce some supporting characters, colleagues of Marcus’ and a friend of Angela’s that may bring some balance to the show. And if the writers can let more true-to-life interactions between the characters take place instead of relying on over-the-top dramatics, they can possibly show some interesting dynamics between all of the members in the couple’s blended family.
My final verdict: For Better or for Worse could be a good show, but right now it’s not. I’m not ready to tune out, just yet, but it’s going to need some tweaking to keep my attention for much longer. I’m beyond the point of trying to call a sitcom good just because it shows black couples on television, and right now I’m not sure that For Better or For Worse does much more than that.
Did you catch the premiere episode? What did you think?

The show is garbage, even though Tyler Perry is a masterful storyteller. Every week is the same commotion between the couple…leave a show like this on the BIG SCREEN; not truly suited for ‘sit-com’ audiences…the chubby, loud-mouth woman really takes away from the show (if there IS one) and the set doesn’t look believable (from the newsroom to the their home). Mr. Perry, add a laugh track; it gets the viewer more involved in the show, as opposed to wondering how one should ‘feel’ while watching the show….to ME, there’s nothing but a lot of ‘cat-scratching’ and ‘over-dramatization’….To be honest, it looks like a BAD reality show.

ya’ll just “HATEN” I LOVE this new TP show. It touch on topics that hits close to home. Yes I agree that it do need the laugh tracks. But over all black women do think about having a waten to exheal moment on our man. PLEASE give it a chance. On demand need to put it back on.

I am watching this show for the first time and I am totally disgusted. The last thing that we need in the black community is a show displaying such negativity in a black marriage. After watching this and Madeas Witness Protection, I don’t know whats going on with Tyler Perry. I think he needs to sit down somewhere..

This show is a disappointment. I’m tired of the same story lines, overly dramatics and a grown woman being portrayed as an angry black woman with nasty attitudes in tylers movies. When will we see positive things. The men are portrayed as dogs. It’s like an overly dramatic musical. Trying too hard to be funny but it’s not funny.

PS all this silly carrying on nonsense of burning cars and clothes. I don’t know of any man or woman in their right mind acting this way. Great actors in this show but doesn’t do them justice

I hate that fake pre.recorded studio audience. They play it too much.and not at the right time.

Thank you steph for being able to watch a televison show without afake laugh track telling you when something is funny. For all those other people out there who absolutely need fake laughs, continue to watch House of Payne & Meet the Browns. Tyler Perry ruined this show in season 2 by adding the laugh track. It doesn’t need it. If you aren’t smart enough to get the jokes, go watch another show. Jeez people.

I agree with you all that believe the laugh tracks. They are unnecessary. We don’t need laughter from a fake audience to know when something is funny. I believe he took away from the show when he added the laugh tracks. In adding left Rick’s he took away from the reality feel the show had. It was different. I liked it. However, overall the show is good.

The characters doesn’t betray the writing material well. Therefore it’s look like bad acting. And the show just feels low budget.

I sort of expected a much better story-but I really thought that was special. Tyler Perry has Whitney Houston’s daughter Christina in the show – it was nice to see her –

Skepticism is always something that comes with a cross-generation game, but from what we’ve seen from Watch Dogs on PS4 thus far, Ubisoft seems to have
the very best in store for current-gen owners.
Consider this though: When you are at work or far away from your spouse and
children, wouldn’t you be happier know that these same fully-trained police-grade German watchdogs are protecting them.
They are dedicated to the protection of their family pack.

I love reading reviews of Tyler Perry’s work because I love seeing the different ways in which critics write what always amounts to “If you like Tyler Perry things generally, there’s nothing to suggest that you won’t also like this Tyler Perry thing.” But gosh, what else is there really to say?
