I have to admit, every time Ludacris’ “My Chick Bad” comes on the radio – I listen to it. All the way through. I like it.
Now that we got that out the way, and you’re finished throwing tomatoes – the point of my post.
I like that song, but man, how many times can I hear a song about why a chick (a “chick,” not a “woman”) is the baddest because of what she can do in the bedroom and how wild and down she is?
I’m all about a message in your music but what message does this send? I want my son to think of women in terms of their beauty, strength, intelligence, sense of humor, etc. Not necessarily getting stuck on how she makes him feel down below.
After President Obama got elected, every single woman I know said she was looking for her Barack. But how many men were looking for a Michelle? A strong, crazy smart woman who is as accomplished as he is, and who also knows how to be stylish without looking like a whore.
Let’s raise our standards on what makes “My Chick Bad.” Got a dope education? Knows how to make a dollar stretch? Supportive and loyal even when the situation isn’t too bright in your favor? That’s a bad chick.

Love it! Tara, what you described is the “true” bad woman. I hope more men will want this type of woman.

GREAT POST, WOW!!!! So true!!!!!!! But you know these men that are so called well established are not looking for a Michelle, they are looking for someone to have fun with UNTIL THEY are ready to settle down!! I am truly loving this one…I can't wait to read some posts from the fella's….

I agree with this post. Too bad I LOVE Ludacris' voice. LOL!

So honest Tara and Erica I love Ludacris too……lol! I actually like him for the all around guy that he is and not just for his music. He does great things for his and other communities and foundations. He's not bad to look at either…..lmbo! It is sad though, to know that men don't value the “Michelle Obama” in a woman. What's even worse is the fact that women try and turn themselves into what these men think they want to see and be. It's one of those “we have to do better” kind of situations. Great post as always!

I like Luda, too. 🙂 Have ever since “What's Your Fantasy?” Talk about inappropriate. I was like a freshman in HS when that came out! LOL

yeaaaah – Luda had me hooked on “What's Your Fantasy?” as well… I had to let him go for a while whilst I got my mind together in Christ, but now, every once in a while, I can sit back and enjoy a lil Luda. 😀
but I was a freshman in college! lol

Awesome Tara!!!!

One thing I didn't add to the this article, and maybe I should, is that a lot of women are looking to even BE a “Michelle.” They don't necessarily value education and they don't have a problem with looking like they forgot to finish putting clothes on in the morning. So maybe it's not the guys' fault…maybe they can't FIND a Michelle? Just playing devil's advocate…
Tara Pringle Jefferson says
Ugh. I hate typos. “….AREN'T looking to be even BE a “Michelle.”

Thanks a LOT, Tara!! *Sarcasm* After weeks of random bootie drops/shakes and upturned top lips, I finally got this catchy diddy out of my head. Now comes this post, and I'm back in love all over again. I'm sorry, but I LOVE this song. It makes me feel very Betty Badass for some reason!! Granted, I don't know a lick of it outside of the chorus, and your point about what makes woman “Bad” is a point well-taken, but I think this opens us up for some much-needed discourse. How about you do an interview with Luda and ask him about some of the non-sexual traits that a “Bad Chick” should have? Go ahead, do it, I double-dog dare ya!
Tara Pringle Jefferson says
Don't get me wrong – I do love it. And I get my Nicki Minaj on, too. (Shhh – don't tell nobody!)

Yeah that song kinda gets on my nerves but you can't help sing it cause t's catchy. I can understand having a down chick, but why she gotta be “hood”? And like you said, “why does she have to be a chick”? Good post.

I agree with everyone. The funny thing is, Ludacris and rappers like him will talk all day about how a “chick” is bad because she is pretty, has a nice body, etc. but in real life, they actually like women who have a brain. I heard that Ludacris was dating a woman who is in medical school.

I have to disagree – in part – with your perspective. As a married black man, I do think that black men are looking for the “Michelle Obama's.” However, I think that black men want a “Michelle Obama” at a certain point in thier lives: after they graduated from college, established themselves financially and have sewn thier “wild oats.” At this point, which is usually around 35 for most black men, black men begin to look for “Michelle Obama.” Unfortunately, this post-35 search is rarely talked about and overshadowed by the wild and crazy pre-35 bachelor days. In sum, my point is even though we don't hear about it as much (and to your point, we should hear more about it), black men do want
“Michelle Obama;” it just depends on his stage of life.
Chocolate Mom says
I think Tyrone hit it directly on the head! Well, said, and this is coming from a 36 yr old married black woman. In my pre-30 years, I wanted to be that woman, but the minute I decided that I wanted to have a family all of that changed. There is a turning point or age I think for most men and women to realize what they really want out of life, but before that, well, play on Luda, play on!

Loving this article. It's definitely food for thought. I don't like the song (lol *dodges tomato*) but i definitely see your point. All too often, we are looked at as objects of desire and not much more than that. We need to be respected for our brains too! If that were the case, maybe more women would strive for more and likewise for men
