It’s no simple feat to take on a role as one of the most powerful and respected women in the world, but Tika Sumpter is up for the challenge. The actress will star (who is also executive producer) as First Lady Michelle Obama in the upcoming film, Southside With You. And in order to tap into the First Lady’s brilliance, she’s literally hitting the books, as the film that will retell the story of the first couple’s first date in 1989
Sumpter caught up with Vulture at HBO’s Bessie premiere in NYC on Wednesday night, where she explained that she’s reading everything she believes Michelle Obama would have read, from Gwendolyn Brooks and Richard Wright, to The First Lady’s own Princeton dissertation. “I’m nervous because she’s Michelle Obama, who is everything every woman wants to be.”
