I am a true romantic who loves love. I recognize how corny that must sound, but it’s the truth. The reason I decided to become a Relationship Coach had everything to do with my desire to see more healthy relationships. Seeing couples in love and witnessing real life happily ever afters motivates me and confirms my decision. I absolutely love a great love story. Whether it’s in the bible, on the big screen or on TV, if it’s an attention grabbing love story, I’m tuned in. Even fictional love stories make me smile. Even they can teach us something about relationships. Whether it’s a crazy love story from American history, a fictional tale or one we wish would’ve ended better, these famous relationships teach us something about love and commitment.
Solomon and his Bride (Bible): Passionate. There is love and passion and the physical attraction is obvious. There is no fear or hesitation in the expression of love. Are you in tune and physically and spiritually connected to your spouse? Is it a mature love as well as a friendship? This love story celebrates the passion all marriages should experience.
Bonnie and Clyde: Ride or die. No one or nothing else comes between you and your spouse. You have their back until the very end. You’ll take on the world for your mate. It’s basically you and your spouse against the world. Through thick and thin, you are loyal and devoted to your partner.
Romeo & Juliet: Can’t live without you. Is your love something you can’t live without. Is your partner the one who completes you? The one you connect with like no other? If you can’t imagine your life without your mate, you definitely have a Romeo & Juliet type of love affair. Of course your marriage won’t end like their relationship, but the love they shared is one to be remembered.
Superman & Lois Lane: You or your spouse have yet to show who you really are in the relationship. Are you still keeping secrets, not revealing your true identity? If so, it’s time to let your mate in. Give them the opportunity to experience and enjoy all of you. It is okay to be completely vulnerable in your marriage; In fact it’s necessary. If you are holding out and worried your mate won’t be accepting of every part of you, think again. The strongest relationships develop as a result of our ability to be unguarded with our thoughts and emotions.
Cinderella & Prince Charming: It feels like a fairy-tale. You have found the mate of your dreams. Sometimes you have to pinch yourself to make sure you aren’t dreaming. Now that’s a love we all eventually hope for. I believe in love and soul mates, but I also know a happily every after doesn’t come without a whole lot of work. This type of love is definitely worth pursuing as long as we are realistic about what’s needed to maintain this relationship.
We are creating our love story every day. Our relationship should be a little of what both partners desire. It will also reflect the energy we put into it. We can build a true romance that honors both partners or we can half-ass it and end up struggling. Because we are all so unique, so will be our stories. It doesn’t matter which of these stories most resemble ours, or whether any of them do; the key is to remember marriage should at least feel like a love story is happening.
