Are rubber wedding bands a practical option for men? Athletes, construction workers, and those who use their hands daily usually can’t wear their weddings when they work. Are rubber wedding rings the answer to this dilemma?

Are Rubber Wedding Bands a Practical Choice for Men?
In the past here on BlackandMarriedWithKids.com, and the Ever After movie Facebook page, there have been conversations about wedding rings. The conversations have ranged from upgrading your ring, the size of your ring to why wouldn’t you wear your wedding ring! Wedding rings seem to bring out some deep-hearted discussions with people.
Wedding Rings, Hard Knocks, and Football
Recently, HBO kicked off its latest season of Hard Knocks. Hard Knocks is a sports series in which HBO follows an NFL team through pre-season training. This season, they are following the Cincinnati Bengals, and wedding rings were being discussed…in an NFL pre-season training camp. Yes, wedding rings are serious!
The starting quarterback of the Bengals, Andy Dalton, sports a rubber wedding band during practices. His teammates do what good teammates (and coaches) do, they began to give him a hard time about it. But, Andy still rocks his rubber ring proudly.
He’s not alone in the dilemma he is facing, being married and being in an environment not really conducive for a wedding ring. Construction workers, surgeons, and equipment operators all face the same challenge. How do you honor your wife and marriage without risking your wedding ring getting lost, damaged, or destroyed? Maybe Andy is on to something.
Do You Wear Your Wedding Ring Everywhere?
I personally enjoy wearing my wedding ring and don’t leave home without it. First, I love my wife, our marriage, and think it is pretty cool that someone said “yes” to me. I have no shame in that, but I also don’t want to appear available to anybody.
If my work can lead to me losing or damaging my wedding ring, I may have to think twice about it. The rubber wedding ring seems like a cool solution to that problem.
L.A. Rams lineman Rodger Saffold talks about wearing a rubber wedding ring at all times in this video from TMZSports:
Not everybody wears their wedding ring everywhere, and it’s no big deal, but what kind of message is sent? The message Andy Dalton is sending is a strong message — he will keep wearing his rubber wedding ring in practice, even if it gives his teammates one more reason to clown. And truth be told, some of the teammates probably wish they were as bold.

Don’t get too hung up on the “ring”. We have been married for almost 27 years. i love to wear my ring and my husband does too. But sometimes it can be impractical. My hubby is a former appliance tech who NEVER removed his ring. When he had hip replacement surgery a couple of years ago, the ring had to be cut off because he could not get it past his knuckle. We both bought new rings! Focus on the relationship — the ring is a TOKEN of your love.

Wearing a wedding ring is a sign of the commitment that you are making to your spouse and to your marriage. As it is a circle, it has no end in your relationship.

I actually think they are pretty cool. The first time I saw them a husband and wife firefighters were wearing them. They expained that they can be cut off more easily than metal plus they won’t rip your finger off if they get caught in machinery, also they don’t conduct heat so working around fire they were better for that.
My Granddad was working in his wood shop one time and when the router took of half is his ring and middle fingers they had to cut off his wedding band and it can be very difficult to get something to cut it with under the band on a swollen finger without causing further injury. The silicone/rubber bands are more firgiving, also you can get a half size smaller and still get it over the knuckle and it fit the ring part of the finger.
I have another friend that works for a major appliance company and sometimes he has to work in the lab building molds so he says that’s partially why he doesn’t wear it, and partially he has had his original ring sized 3 times (bigger to smaller and to bigger) and if he sizes it again it will break so he doesn’t wear his ring at all… he is a christian married man of 15 years and a father, a really good man but I think not wearing his ring sends a false message about who he is.
ALso when you are traceling (especially in some other countries or doing community work in questionable neighborhoods) they are more modest and you aren’t likely to get mugged for someone to steal it so you can leave the valuable one at home for safety but still show you are proudly committed to your spouse.
Plus they start at about six bucks so if you lose it fishing ot swimming or something who cares.
Just my opinion.

I’m not sure about rubber, but I’m pretty flexible about wedding rings… we have a non-traditional pair of tungsten rings, and I really like them 🙂

I’m actually looking into it.
I lost my original wedding ring 5 years ago.
I’ve lost 2 other cheaper rings since then
Currently, I’m wearing a chrome plated faucet ring, that fits perfectly.
Problem is… I take my ring off constantly – either washing hands, or applying lotions. I don’t wear when exercising either, so it’s always being misplaced.
I’m tentative on getting other… just as I’m tentative on getting expensive glasses, since I used to lose those all the time too… in part because I don’t need them MOST of the time.
I agree with others above… it’s a SYMBOL, but not the RELATIONSHIP…. happily married 17 years.
