If you are drinking a soda at the moment you may want to put it down and read this carefully. Data supports the fact that our children are obese at a higher rate than their peers. They are consuming sugary drinks at alarming rates placing them at risk not just for obesity but for diabetes as well. Despite knowing this information both the NAACP and the Hispanic Federation are uniting in an effort to prevent the ban on sugary drinks from happening. Their primary concern is the impact this rule will have on minority owned businesses.
“The issue is complex for the minority advocates, especially given that obesity rates are higher than average among blacks and Hispanics, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The groups say in court papers they’re concerned about the discrepancy, but the soda rule will unduly harm minority businesses and “freedom of choice in low-income communities.” For more on this story head over to The Grio.
