The Good Book, says “He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor from the Lord- Proverbs 18:22.” The thing I love about this verse is that there are no qualifiers—find a wife, get favor. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.
The problem is, sometimes it feels like the brothers aren’t working hard enough to do the finding.
So I put my thinking cap on and asked my brothers ( I have five!) where a nice young lady might position herself to be found. Here’s their responses and a couple of my own:
- Cultural institutions, Such as College Libraries, Art Galleries and the Symphony
Granted, a young man frequenting these cultural institutions may be a bit nerdy. But he’s also well-cultured and probably likes to travel. Y’all might just have something in common. And he’s probably great at making casual conversation.
- The Cereal Aisle at Whole Foods
You laugh but nine times out of ten, that handsome fellow inspecting the organic kale is married or not interested. But that brother over there in the cereal aisle…he’s probably single.
And if he’s shopping at Whole Foods, he might be a man with a little pocket change and/or cares about his health.
- The A/V Ministry
No matter what church you go to, the Audio-Visual Ministry is probably run by a bunch of men. And it takes a smart and committed individual to run lights, sound, monitors and visuals for multiple services.
Looking for somewhere to serve at church? Start there. As a bonus, you’ll be on a first-name basis with all the musicians. Amen somebody!
- Food Truck Festivals
Personally, food trucks give me the heebie-jeebies. And I question their sanitary standards.
But my younger brother, a man about town, says it’s a good place to be found. They usually have a hip, adventurous clientele. So I’m taking his word for it. Besides, it’s summer and these things will abound.
- Wherever God Leads
One day after work, I was getting ready to make the two-hour trek back home from downtown Washington, D.C. I had on my ugly winter hat, commuter tennis shoes and looked a hot mess.
It was THE worst time to run into a guy that I had a crush on 18 months earlier. But I did.
We had a graduate class together back in El Paso, Texas and lost touch due to a series of miscommunications (read:drama). But God saw fit to align jobs, two moves across the country and even the metro transit system… to allow our paths to cross again at that exact moment at the Pentagon City Station.
Four years later, we got hitched.
On our wedding day, we took a picture at that very subway stop to remember what God did. But we aren’t special. God wants to do something miraculous for each of us, follow His lead.

BMWK: Where else is a good place to cross paths with a nice young man?
