Recently, I wrote an article that literally set off a slew of comments, good and bad, from people questioning the methods I used in growing natural hair for my daughter. While I always appreciate the comments, there is one lesson I want other parents who are learning to deal with their daughter’s natural hair to learn. Natural hair Nazis need to take a seat. Find out the five ways I did for my daughter’s growing natural hair!

Wear Your Hair Naturally
Being natural is not a cult where you “have” to abide by certain rules or else you’ll get kicked out. Growing natural hair simply means you do not put a relaxer in your hair. It doesn’t matter if you wear your hair in an afro, straight, or curly. You are natural. I don’t prescribe to hair types or beliefs that one ingredient will ruin a product. Instead, I experiment and use trial and error. It may not work for everyone, but it’s worked for my daughter and myself.
The Successful Experiment On My Daughter’s Hair
I initially made the decision not to put chemicals in my daughter’s hair because I saw the damage they did to my hair and I wanted her to love hers — something I didn’t learn to do until adulthood. So, while I knew the journey would be difficult, I was ready to take on the challenge. Her hair didn’t miraculously start growing overnight. But, when I became consistent in my practices, her hair started to improve.
There were times when I was told by people to “just put a perm in it,” but I knew I wanted her to accept her hair in its natural state. In the end, going natural allowed her hair to be healthy, but not without a lot of trials and errors on my part.
5 Best Growing Natural Hair Strategies For Your Daughter
To further help you guys who are struggling with your daughter’s growing natural hair, I’m going to summarize some natural hair strategies that took me 3 years to learn. While these are specific strategies you can start doing today, remember everything will not work for everyone.
1. Use Aloe Vera Juice In Your Hair Routine
I mix it into my daily conditioning spray, I put a capful of conditioner, and sometimes, I even drink it. Aloe vera juice is a natural hair detangler and conditioner. I personally buy an all-natural brand, and it makes her hair soft and gives it shine.
2. Make A Conditioning Spray That Will Help You Keep The Hair Conditioned On A Daily Basis
I only “do” her hair once every two to three days, but I spray her hair daily with a homemade conditioning spray I made. It gives her hair a shine and detangles it (if necessary). Also, guess what’s in the spray? That’s right — aloe vera juice!
3. Experiment With Products To See What Works Well With Your Daughter’s Hair
It took me literally three years to find products that work on my daughter’s hair. Her hair is coiled tightly, and it sucks up moisture. So, as good as my products may sound, use trial and error to find products that work on your daughter’s hair.
4. Limit The Amount Of Heat You Use In Her Hair
I’ve never used heat on my daughter’s hair in the 4 years she’s been natural. Even after I wash and condition it, I style it wet, wrap it in a silk scarf and take it down the next day. This has allowed me to make sure I don’t damage her hair right when I finally got it to grow. I’m still debating when I will get it straightened, but until then, I leave her hair curly.
5. Deep Condition The Hair On A Weekly Basis
I wash my daughter’s hair about once every two weeks. But, in between washing her hair, I deep condition it weekly. This is the key to making sure moisture is being put back in her hair. I don’t try anything fancy. I add our regular conditioner and mix some extra virgin olive oil, a capful of aloe vera juice, and a plastic cap. I don’t add heat, but I do let the conditioner sit overnight. Whenever I wash it out, her hair is moisturized and almost revitalized from the week’s styling.

In the end, learning the ways of growing natural hair is a process. What works for me may not work for you. But, when you do your research, you can rest assure you will start to notice a change in moisture and length in your daughter’s hair. Do these simple methods of growing natural hair now, and for sure, your daughter will love her hair more!

I have tried Doo Grow hair grease and products. This seems to be a strong line of products for children. While using this product line my 2 year old lost hair and the texture changed to a hard coarser feel.
May be ok later in agebut was too much for her. I use Dudley’s products and have seen new growth and a texture of softness. Also low iron can cause slow hairgrowth and coarser texture. Also a skin tone of uneven color.

I see that this is about having natural hair but do you recommend anything for growth? My daughter is going to be 5 years old and her hair is still at her ears & very thin. I cut her ends and I put oils and I don’t see any change.

Nice post. Hair growth has become a problem most of the people suffering across the world. The actual reason for seeing less/no hair growth is the hair follicles are in rest phase for temporary/permanent. There were three stages in hair follicles,1) anagen- active hair growth phase 2)catagen- transition phase(the lower part of hair follicle attached to the hair shaft) 3) telogen- hair is started falling in this stage, a severe hair loss will be seen in this stage. In the resting phase hair follicle it starts losing hair, there you see no hair growth. Use provillus for making your hair follicle to activate, the active minoxidil in provillus makes your hair follicle to produce hair .

I have tried so many things. My daughter had very thick hair while her early years. She is now 12 years old, and her hair is very thick, but so short. Now it’s thick and long.while her hair was so short,(by the way, this was while she was around 7 years old) People have been telling me to wash my daughter’s hair every other day. I have tried that, but my poor daughter’s hair is still very short. I also bought this very popular hair product called Shea Moisture. Her hair is getting much better. I got the shampoo, conditioner, and masque for it. It’s an AMAZING product. It could help a bald person grow hair! But there is one comdition, you cannot put too many braids on her hair. Trust me, I know she’ll probably be worried about what her friends will think, but it’s worth it. It only took about 5 months, and her hair is great! I suggest you get this product. You could find it at Walmart or target. It will change your life. I know because I have been through that, and my daughter has also.

My twins, a boy and a girl, were born with very little hair. Over the 3 years they’ve been on this earth I have struggled with their hair issues. My boy is easy because he can just were his hair short. My little girl I. The other hand suffers with diffuse thinning. The parts that are growing in are pretty lengthy but I can’t style it certain ways because it looks very thin. After doing research I’ve decided to take her to the Dr. For tests to make sure it’s not a medical condition such as Telum Effluvium, low zinc or iron, sensitivity to gluten, or some other condition. If you see thinning that seems to linger or get worse take them to a dr to get a proper diagnosis to see if something can be done to reverse the situation. My daughters hair is
My hair and I can’t help it effecting me as much as her. She’s still very young but she’s already asking for long hair like xyz ( her doll, the white girls at church, her mixed sister). I wear my hair natural so she sees there’s nothing wrong with her natural hair because it’s what God gave her.

My daughter is ten years old. She has very thick, curly, and long hair in the front (along with dandrum) and it is steadily growing. Her hair is so then in the back in between her ears that you can see her scalp and it is very short. I have never used heat or a perm in her hair since she was born. I moisturize daily and deep condition weekly. She is ashamed to wear her hair in a ponytail and mostly wants protective styles that hides it. Can anyone suggest anything? I feel awful that she is ashamed of her hair.
Jene says
To be honest it’s how you do her hair I perm my daughter hair and I grease her scalp and make ponytails I just keep her hair moisturized. And I still use natural products in her hair and it’s shoulder length perms don’t damage your hair you just have to use them correctly I’m not saying go out there and buy her a perm but I didn’t put it in her hair till she was 6 and her hair super thick and kinky so it helps just to calm the kinky down and it’s easy for me to comb threw and section and it has worked for us , ????? Vitamins are also great for hear growth! And lots of water (Cantu hair products are awesome ) ( olive oil). Black Castro oil ) coconut oil) And keep hair in ponytails and twists there hair will grow ! My daughter. 8 now and does not like ponytails at all now I would get her hair braided up and keep them in protective styles and grease her scalp to keep her hair from having dandruff. Not box braids like get her hair braided up in to a bun to get the back growing even buy a ponytail to put on top after you braid it up a cute kinky puff ponytail And when you take it down wash it and grease her scalp and braided back up it will promote hair growth
